We Are Cervid Complete

Cervid Complete deer feeds was developed by Ryan Koonsman, owner of K3 Land & Whitetail Services. K3 Land & Whitetail is a multifaceted company that helps clients acquire, stock and manage Texas hunting ranches and breeding operations. Being in the whitetail deer breeding business for 20+ years we were able to identify inefficiencies in common management practices and feed programs. In order for a whitetail deer breeding operation to be the most profitable it requires a combination of high fertility rates, low mortality rates and early maturing animals. In order to achieve these things, it takes strict management and a very efficient feed program. In an effort to address the nutritional needs of the deer Cervid Complete deer feeds was developed.

Research and Development

In the early years, we were having trouble with our pen raised deer not maintaining their body condition when they were released and stocked onto ranches. Through several years of feed trials, we learned the reason behind this was that our feed program was not conditioning their rumen to efficiently process native pasture forages. Protein pellets are a great delivery method to supplement deer and exotic species, but if fed exclusively in a pen setting, the deer’s rumen never fully activates because everything within the pellets has already been milled down. To combat this, we started including as many unprocessed feed ingredients into their feed rations as safely possible. The incorporation of a high percentage of whole grains, beans, seeds and long stem roughage quickly solved our problems. Once we incorporated this dietary change, the deer held their body condition and no longer had a nutritional transition period from pen to pasture.

As we continued to develop the Cervid Complete feed rations we discovered the importance and benefits of elevated fat concentrations in a deer feed ration. We found variations of fat content have a greater overall impact on the deer’s productivity than variations in the protein content of the rations. Most deer feeds on the market will have a crude fat concentration between 2%-4%. We found a minimum crude fat of 6% to be the necessary maintenance level for deer feed rations. With periodic elevated fat levels of 10%-12% to be greatly beneficial at certain times throughout the year. During the summer months, when the females are lactating and the bucks are growing antlers are the highest calorie intakes throughout the year. It’s during this time that significant increases in fat content in the diet is greatly beneficial. When a doe is fed a highly concentrated feed, those nutrients are passed through the milk directly to their fawns. This enriched milk stimulates early growth and development in fawns that boost their immune systems, survivability and long-term productivity. This fast start will promote early maturity allowing them to show their genetic potential sooner.

The third phase of feed trials was centered around mineral sources and inclusion rates. The results in this trial were pretty dramatic. The source of certain minerals is very important as well. Absorption rates vary greatly among mineral sources and some have very minimal benefit. Organic sources of minerals are the most beneficial and have the highest absorption rates. Naturally, the best mineral sources are the most expensive, but the added productivity of the animals cover the extra cost. The biggest advantage to an efficient mineral program will be seen in fertility rates. We have seen our fawn crops increase by as much as 75% once we balanced all aspects of their feed rations.
